Don't Take It So hard out of mastering. Now what?

Howdy Folks.

I'm listening to the Mastered version of DTISHOM and...err...um. Sounds the same but different.

In discussion with Mr McGlynn about what mastering does, we talked about the expectation we have of mastering engineers - we send them out tracks and they come back Touched By God.

After listening to the song for the last few months of recording and mixing, it's hard to see the forest/tree thing.

The lesson on this one is that the Producing decision is 'who you work with' as much as it is 'what you do'.

Sooner or later you have to trust the Ears of the folks you're working with.

I for one, feel like we're in safe hand with Mr McGlynn and Mr Bowden. With any luck, I'll have this song released within the next few days. It's a cracker.

Landscapes out the window, Heavy Metal Discussion inside the car- weekend gig report sort of

Howdy folks.

Boy I needed that. Life's been hectic and the chance to drive out to Oberon was a welcome recharge for my batteries. Take a wander through my pics and join me in some relaxation.

After my discussion about Folk metal, Rosie obliged with some Iron Maiden for the trip to Oberon. Who would have pictured Rosie as a Maiden fan? Eh? Run To The Hills was very appropriate. Anyway.

We had a great time playing music to enthusiastic locals who are as pleased to hang out with us as we are to see them dance. And that's quite a bit. Love you guys. Cheers to Grahame, Mark, Charmayne, Pam and all the Oberonites who make us feel so welcome.

It's been a while since I travel-blogged, not too much has changed.

And driving through rural New South Wales, on a cool, sunny autumn day remains a profound pleasure.

Rosie very kindly drove so I could take a breather. Stunning countryside.

I've taken a picture of this broken street signage every time I have been there.

Selfishly, I hope it's there for many more pictures to come :-)

I derive profound satisfaction for a night of music, pleasant company and Green Bathing as we drive across the mountains.

It's a real gratitude moment for me.

Thanks to Rosie for the drive, to Gary for sound and to the boys for a solid up-vibe session of playing.

These are the good bits. They're worth celebrating.

From BOC to Tull and songs about Swords - listening to folk Metal with Sam

Ever had one of those nights where your friends are in charge of the radio and you wind up listening to stuff you wouldnt otherwise listen to? Let's just say I am now familiar with Folk Metal, Celtic Metal, relistened to Aqualung (Tull), Twisted Sister and Motorhead (BTW how hard can ya be with harmonies in yer songs mate). Plus some rather high voiced songs about Elves and Trolls and what not. As the only member of the band to be into BOC (7 screamin dizbusters!) I can dig it. However, I wonder if I should really have loaded these tracks onto my player for the trip to Oberon. Hope Rosie likes Trollhammer from Finland. Love to Sam :-)

I read the news today, oh boy - why we're more grateful than usual to be playing this weekend.

Into each life a little rain must fall, fair enough.

Some days the headlines are sadder than others.

This weekend we'll be playing music, in a gorgeous place. A place where the drive to get there is a battery recharge moment for me. Bald grassed rocky hills up from the gullies where the river collects.

I'll feel more grateful than usual for being able to do it.

Don't Take It So Hard out of mixing, mastering awaits - or - Unmaking a non album uncontinues not yes

Double negatives in English are puzzling.

We're not making an album right now. We just have an amount of songs, equivalent to an album's worth, that we've recorded/are recording.

Why? The album is dead. Long live the single.

Rolling stone says:

Additionally, the digital side of the industry is struggling as streaming sites chip away at sales

Oh what the? the single is dead too?

Digital album sales are down 11.7 percent for the year, and à la carte downloads are down another 12.8 percent according to Billboard. Illegal downloading has no doubt eroded much of those digital sales, but it’s the emergence of legal streaming sites like Spotify and Pandora that has also chipped away at overall sales. Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" had 544,000 digital sales this week partly because the track isn'tavailable on Spotify, forcing fans to download the song (or watch it on YouTube, where it has already accrued 46 million views).

Do humans want new music? My guess is yes.

Will they pay for it?.

Maybe.

Sometimes.

When they feel like it.

All sales are voluntary.

Meanwhile, we can't spend too much time worrying about the state of the disrupted market.
